On December 28, PBS will air a documentary entitled “Louisa May Alcott: The Woman Behind Little Women”. It will certainly have some rich material to depict.

Like many of my contemporaries, reading ‘Little Women’ was part of my emerging interest in fiction as a child. Of course, the family life was enthralling to my 12-year-old mind, but also, I loved reading about life in Concord, Massachusetts.

Now, here’s an article in ‘Humanities’ by John Matteson, that adds background to Alcott’s life. I loved learning that she grew up borrowing books from Emerson’s library; learning about nature from Thoreau and that Nathaniel Hawthorne was a family friend!

It’s a well-written piece that gives knowledge and pleasure and makes me look forward to the PBS documentary.

Route 66 is all mixed up in my mind with memories of a television series called “Route 66″, starring Martin Milner and George Maharis, a pop song by Nelson Riddle, and most recently, a roadtrip with friends through New Mexico and Arizona that touched on the route along the way.

I’m always attracted to books with a strong sense of place, so it was fun to discover the following booklist on Fiction-L about the route. It was compiled several years ago, and I have a couple of additions to it.

Carol O’Connel’s ‘Find Me’ places a serial killer on Route 66; it was published in 2006 and is the 9th book in the Kathy Mallory series.

Under non-fiction, I’d like to add ‘The Complete Route 66 Lost & Found’ by Russell A. Olsen

The following was copied from a Fiction-L booklist:

Some had suggested authors & no specific titles; I included the areas in parenthesis for these.

generally have a medical-romance component as well; I really like her
work. (She does not have paranormal elements)

Tracie Peterson is starting a new series set in Kitka, Alaska, and a
number of other Christian-fiction authors are writing Western
historicals set in places like the mining camps of Colorado (Tamera
Alexander comes to mind).

Something graphic but with issues to talk about (fun for the mind and the
body!). (This was from Fiction-L)

Juska, Jane. A round-heeled woman : my late-life adventures in sex and romance
Juska, Jane. Unaccompanied women : late-life adventures in love, sex, and real estate

The Crimson Petal and the White, Michael Faber (fiction)
Real Live Nude Girl, Carol Queen (nonfiction)

Kushiel’s Dart by Jacqueline Carey

I’ve always thought “to Have and To Hold” by Patricia Gaffney would be
fascinating for the right book club–the power dynamics between the hero
and heroine are really interesting.

Broken by Megan Hart is both erotic and has lots of issues.

Loretta Chase’s Lord of Scoundrels.
Emma Holly and her Black Lace books like Menage or Cooking Up a Storm
Robin Schone’s the Lady’s Tutor.

BUTTERFLY TATTOO by Deidre Knight.

“A reliable wife” by Goolrick, Robert

Paul Di Filippo’s A MOUTHFUL OF TONGUES

From various Fiction-L posts:

Pat says these paranormals have humor with a high degree of sensuality:
Bangs, Nina: Castle of Dark Dreams Series
Cassidy, Dakota: Accidental Friends Series
Castle, Kendra Leigh: Highland Series
Child, Maureen: Fiend Series
Davidson, MaryJanice: Fred the Mermaid Series
Fox, Angela: Demon Slayers Series
Haddock, Nancy: Oldest City Vampire Series
Harper, Nina: Succubus Series
Henry, Mark: Amanda Feral Series
Kenner, Julia: Demon-Hunting Soccer Mom Series
Kessler, Jackie: Hell on Earth Series
Laurenston, Shelly: Pride Series
MacAlister, Katie: Aisling Grey Series
MacAlister, Katie: Dark Ones Series
MacAlister, Katie: Silver Dragon Series
Thompson, Vicki Lewis: Hex Series
Wisdom, Linda: Hex Series

Lucy writes:

Not sure if anyone has mentioned this author or series yet, but what
about the ‘Felix Castor’ series by Mike Carey. Felix is similar to
the Jim Butcher’s ‘Harry Dresden’. He’s a freelance exorcist (in
London) who investigates crimes which have paranormal connections.
Carey’s world is a bit darker than Butcher’s.

The titles in the series are: “The Devil You Know” (2007 in US, c2006
in UK); “Vicious Circle” (2008 in US; 2006 in UK); and “Dead Men’s
Boots” (2009). Carey apparently has two more titles in the series
coming (they have been released in the UK but are not available from a
US publisher yet).

Lisa:

If Jim Butcher is suggested, then I think it safe to suggest Charlaine Harris’s Sookie Stackhouse Southern Vampire mysteries – very popular here and they are fast enjoyable reads with a mystery or situation to resolve, romance, sex and humor.

Lexi:

Shadows in the Darkness by Elaine Cunningham -
From Publishers Weekly
“An elf packing heat who enjoys looking like jail bait when necessary
is the latest twist on the New Weird—fantasy fused with contemporary
mystery tropes laced with erotic undertones—a genre Laurell K.
Hamilton’s Anita Blake series helped establish almost 10 years ago.

In the first of the Changeling trilogy, Cunningham (Windwalker) delivers
urban fantasy with a straight face (C.S.I. via Tolkien?), employing
the quicksilver pacing typical of such suspense authors as Vachs,
Gardner and Koontz. Gwen “GiGi” Gellman, however, is not a vampire
slayer; she’s a freelance PI based in Providence on the brink of
discovering her DNA is not human.

Tish:

This series features sexy vampires and “biting” humor (ok, I’ll slap myself for that one!)

Argeneau series by Lynsay Sands

1 Single white vampire
2 Love bites
3 Tall, dark & hungry
4 A Quick bite
5 A Bite to remember
6 Bite me if you can
7 The Accidental vampire

Robin:

Victoria Dahl’s contemporaries are hilarious and super sexy!

Talk Me Down
Start Me Up

Lynne:

Nina Bangs (http://www.ninabangs.com/ )

Kerrelyn Sparks (http://www.kerrelynsparks.com/ )

Katie MacAlister (http://katiemacalister.com/ ) all write along the lines of Erin McCarthy and Lynsay Sands. The first two are vampires and shapeshifters; the third
author has dragons, imps, pixies and other creatures – oh, and a talking
dog named Jim who was a minor demon.

Jean:

Maybe this is off the mark, but I couldn’t get enough of Karen Marie Moning’s Highlander titles. Talk about ‘super sexy’!!!! They certainly fit the bill and there was some humor in all of them.

Pat:

Here’s a stand-alone paranormal mystery–great story, not too much violence, no sex:

Killough, Lee (pseudonym for Karen Lee Killough): (Killer Karma) In this stand-alone novel, San Francisco Police Inspector Cole Dunavan wakes up one afternoon to find that he has been murdered (shot in the head) and is now a ghost, invisible to most humans. In this plot-driven story, Cole must quickly learn ghostly skills so that he can communicate with his old partner, find his body, bring his killer to justice, and make sure that his wife knows the truth of his innocence.

Here are several paranormal mystery series. The sensuality levels are relatively low:

James, Dean: SIMON KIRBY-JONES MYSTERIES SERIES (Posted to Death, Faked to Death, Decorated to Death, Baked to Death) This is a cozy mystery series with a twist. Dr. Simon Kirby-Jones is a medieval scholar, a romance novelist, an amateur sleuth, and a gay vampire. His vampiric traits (e.g., sun sensitivity, bloodlust) are totally controlled by medication, so for all intents and purposes, he appears to be a normal, if extremely strong, young man (Garlic, though, can be deadly!). The stories are plot driven, with humorous dialogue to provide comic relief.

Laurie, Victoria: PSYCHIC EYE MYSTERIES SERIES (Abby Cooper, Psychic Eye; Better Read Than Dead; A Vision of Murder; Killer Insight; Crime Seen; Death Perception, Doom with a View-9/09) Abigail (Abby) Cooper is a psychic who lives in the Detroit metropolitan area. Along with her boyfriend Dutch Rivers, an FBI agent, she solves problems and investigates mysteries—both human and supernatural. Abbey has a few traits in common with Anita Blake: an independent spirit, a PI exercise buddy, and a tendency to get really banged up during each of her adventures (lots of stitches and hospitalizations). No vampires or werewolves, though—just a ghost or two. One distracting note: there are many small but annoying copy-proofing errors in all of the books (e.g., palpable for palatable; seem for seen, who’s for whose).

Laurie, Victoria: GHOST HUNTER MYSTERIES SERIES (What’s a Ghoul to Do?; Demons Are a Ghoul’s Best Friend; Ghouls Just Haunt to Have Fun) M. J. Holliday and her gay partner Gilley Gillespie are ghost-busters. M.J. is a medium who can see and speak to ghosts, and Gilley is a computer-savy tech guy who takes care of the machinery. Plots revolve around M. J.’s ghost-busting cases.

Garey, Terri: NICKI STYX SERIES (Dead Girls Are Easy; A Match Made in Hell; You’re the One That I Haunt; Silent Night, Haunted NightI-10/09) During a near-death experience in which she is told to go back and do good, Nicki, the owner of a vintage clothing store in Atlanta, finds that she can see and hear the ghosts of dead people—most of whom are looking for her help. Although the series some chick-lit elements (e.g., lots of fashion descriptions, breezy tone—particularly from Evan), the heroine has enough attitude and angst to make it a UF.

Thurlo, David, and Aimee Thurlo: LEE NEZ, NIGHTWALKER SERIES (Second Sunrise, Blood Retribution, Pale Death, Surrogate Evil) This is Tony Hillerman’s New Mexico with vampires. Lee Nez (AKA Leonard Hawk) is a New Mexico State Patrol Officer who was turned into a vampire back in the 1940s when he tried to stop a German Nazi vampire from stealing a load of plutonium being transported to the White Sands military facility. A Navajo medicine man is able to minimize his vampire traits so that Lee can tolerate the sun (with plenty of SPF 50 sunblock) and eat regular food (with some calf’s blood on the side). Now, forty years later, Lee is back at his old job, with a new name and lots of experience in dealing with his half-vampire state. He teams up with FBI Officer Diane Lopez in book 1, as they search for evil Navajo skinwalkers and for the German vampire who changed Lee over. The stories are plot driven, with countless car chases, stake-outs, ambushes, and close-quarter fights, all held together by matter-of-fact, cop-talk dialogue.

Blair, Annette: VINTAGE MAGIC SERIES (A Veiled Deception, Larceny & Lace) Madeira (Maddy) Cutler is a New York fashion designer who longs for the small-town life of her home town of Mystic Falls, Connecticut. In book one, she goes home for her sister’s wedding and immediately becomes involved in a murder mystery. When she touches a vintage wedding dress, she has a vision of a woman who wore the dress decades ago. Future books will undoubtedly follow Maddy as she solves more Mystic murder mysteries.

Daniels, Casey: PEPPER MARTIN MYSTERIES SERIES (Don of the Dead, The Chick and the Dead, Tombs of Endearment, Night of the Loving Dead, Dead Man Talking-10/09) Hip and fashion savvy, Pepper works as a tour guide in Garden View Cemetery (a stand-in for the historic Lakeview Cemetery) in Cleveland. After falling and hitting her head on a gravestone, she suddenly gains the ability to see and talk with ghosts. Soon, Pepper becomes a PI for her ghostly companions, solving crimes and investigating the mysteries surrounding their deaths.

Lee:

Mike Resnick’s Stalking series (Stalking the Unicorn, Stalking
the Vampire, Stalking the Dragon.) A hard-boiled detective stumbles into
an alternate New York City, & uses his investigative skills to deal with
assorted other-worldly criminals. Lighter than the Dresden books, but not
cozy.

Bridget:

How about Mark del Franco’s Connor Grey series? Druid P.I. with no powers in Boston.

Stacy:

The Repairman Jack series by F. Paul Wilson is about all the woo woo I can take, and I really like this series.

CONSPIRACIES:
From Booklist
The third Repairman Jack novel (after The Tomb in 1984 and Legacies in
1998) is by far the best.

Penny:

May I suggest, Kat Richardson’s Greywalker series. Urban fantasy set in Seattle. Harper Blaine is a PI. After a vicious beating by a perp, Harper dies for two minutes. When she recovers from the beating, Harper begins to notice the subtle and not so subtle changes happening around her. Harper can now slip into the Grey, ‘a place between our world and the next’. The Grey is the place where things that go bump in the night exist along with other spooky, scary things.

Liz:

Virginia Kantra’s Children of the Sea series – 3 paranormal romances
featuring selkies:

1. Sea Witch
2. Sea Fever
3. Sea Lord (just released, 5/09)
